“Food Rocks” has Disney written all over it. Located in The Land pavilion in Future World at Epcot, “Food Rocks” is a rowdy concert starring recognizable rock 'n' roll performers that take the shapes of favorite foods. Jam to the sounds of artists like the Peach Boys, Pita Gabriel and Chubby Cheddar. And of course there’s Füd Wrapper, based on Tone Loc, who emcees the concert.
Popular musicians are seen as cartoon versions of foods as they take the stage, singing classics that have been humorously (or not so humorously) altered to relay a nutritional message about food. Rock ‘n Roll and the five food groups? Somehow it all just seems sacrilege, no? Nevertheless, the line up continues as a slew of performers join in on the 12-minute show. Headliner groups include The Utensils, a collection of kitchen gadgets based on the band Queen; The Refrigerator Police, singing a parody of “Every Breath You Take”; and a piano-playing pineapple based on Little Richard, to name a few.
We are still fans of The Excess, a group of antagonistic hard rockers that counter the nutritional message with an original song called “Give Us Junk.” Despite the presence of these cutting edge rockers, if you don’t have the kids with you, don’t feel bad about passing up this show. |
